Kashmir is now one of the few places in the world where walnut is still available at an altitude of 5500-7500 feet above sea level.  It is home to some of the best walnut wood carving done anywhere in the world.  Its color, grain and sheen are unique, and the carving and fret work that is done on this wood is of the finest quality.  The carving of items is an elaborate process and involves a high degree of skill and craftsmanship with the help of small indigenous tools.  Wax polishing brings out the inherent sheen of walnut wood, and is by far the most popular finish.
