India has a diverse and rich
textile tradition. Indian silk was popular in Rome in the early
centuries of the Christian era. It is obtained from cocoons of
certain species of caterpillars, is soft and has a brilliant
sheen. It is very strong and is able to absorb as much as a
third of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp.
Weaving one color horizontally and a complimentary color
vertically results in beautiful shimmering colors.
Pashmina wool, also known as
cashmere wool, is the softest, most luxurious and best wool in
the world. It comes from the Himalayan region from a special
Himalayan goat which only lives at the altitude of 12000 to
14000 ft. where temperatures only reach 10 degrees centigrade.
Centuries ago, this fine fabric was known as the Royal Fabric,
favored by emperors, kings, and noblemen. Today this precious
fabric continues to be hand woven by traditional weavers whose
families have perfected this craft for generations. |
