Two very popular types of rugs from the foothills of the
Himalayas are the chainstitch rug and the namadas. Chainstitch
work is the specialty of Kashmir, India and has been made since
the days of the Mughal dynasties. The namadas begin high on the
Himalayan reaches of Himachal, where the hill-folk rear sheep
and goats for the famous wool and hair that goes into these
rugs. They are made by felting the wool and then embroidering
flowing patterns of flowers and animals. |
